Layered lighting is simply the practice of using several kinds of light together. It sounds like a designer’s phrase, but it describes what comfortable rooms have always done.

Begin with how the room is used

Write down what happens after dark. Reading needs a different kind of light than conversation. Cleaning wants more coverage than watching a film. Once the activities are clear, the fixtures are easier to choose.

Build from low to high

Start with lamps close to where people sit. Then notice what remains dark. Add a floor lamp, wall light or dimmed ceiling source only where it solves a specific problem.

Good lighting is cumulative. No single lamp has to carry the room.

If you are working with what you already own, use the under-$50 living-room lighting plan to decide whether your first purchase should be a bulb, a dimmer or one additional lamp.
