If one table or floor lamp is too bright, renters have two inexpensive choices: replace its bulb with a smart bulb or place a plug-in dimmer between the lamp and the outlet.
The smart bulb offers schedules and adjustable color. The plug-in dimmer offers a familiar physical control. The cheaper answer depends on what is already in the lamp.
The quick answer
Choose a smart bulb when:
- You want schedules, remote control or tunable white light
- The lamp can remain switched on at all times
- One person does not mind completing setup in an app
- You are starting with a non-dimmable bulb
Choose a plug-in dimmer when:
- You want a visible physical slider anyone can use
- The lamp already has—or can accept—a compatible dimmable LED bulb
- You do not need schedules or color adjustment
- You want the light to keep working without Wi-Fi or an account
If the lamp contains a permanently integrated LED rather than a replaceable bulb, neither answer is automatic. Follow the lamp manufacturer’s instructions; many integrated fixtures cannot be placed on an external dimmer.

The lowest-cost smart path
A no-hub bulb avoids the cost of a separate bridge. The Tapo L535E V3 was listed at $14.99 in the manufacturer’s U.S. store when checked. Tapo specifies 1,100 lumens, 2500–6500K tunable white, 90+ CRI, Matter support and direct 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connectivity.
That makes it a credible one-bulb experiment. It is brighter than a standard 800-lumen bulb, so the ability to save a lower evening brightness matters.
What “no hub required” does and does not mean
The bulb can connect directly to Wi-Fi and operate through the Tapo app without a Tapo hub. Adding it to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings through Matter may still require the appropriate controller from that ecosystem.
Also budget for the behavior change. A smart bulb stops being reachable when someone turns off the lamp’s own switch. If that will happen daily, an inexpensive smart bulb can become an expensive source of irritation.
The simplest physical path
The Lutron Credenza LED+ TTCL-100H is a plug-in slider rated for up to 100 watts of compatible screw-in LED or CFL bulbs. It requires no app, account, bridge or wall wiring.
The dimmer alone is not the whole purchase. If the existing bulb is not marked dimmable—or is absent from the manufacturer’s compatibility results—include a compatible bulb in the total.

Do not combine the two systems
Putting a smart bulb on a conventional plug-in or wall dimmer is not a clever way to get both kinds of control. The external dimmer reduces or alters the power delivered to electronics that expect full line voltage. Results can include flicker, unreliable connectivity, buzzing or premature failure.
Use one control architecture per lamp:
- Smart architecture: full power to a smart bulb; dim in software or with a compatible smart button.
- Conventional architecture: compatible dimmable LED bulb; dim with the plug-in control.

For one lamp, a no-hub smart bulb often has the lowest entry price. A plug-in dimmer can be the better long-term value when the household prioritizes obvious physical control and the lamp already contains a compatible bulb.
Two setup plans
Plan A: flexible evening lamp
- Confirm the lamp accepts an A19/E26 bulb and does not have an integrated dimmer.
- Install one no-hub tunable-white smart bulb.
- Leave the physical lamp switch on.
- Save one bright task setting and one 2700K low-brightness evening setting.
- Put a small label near the switch for the first week if other people use the lamp.
Plan B: no-app evening lamp
- Confirm the lamp uses a replaceable standard bulb.
- Choose a 2700K, 90+ CRI dimmable LED in the needed lumen output.
- Verify that exact model using the dimmer manufacturer’s compatibility tool.
- Plug the lamp into the dimmer and the dimmer into the wall.
- Place the slider where it can be reached from the seat or on the way into the room.
Which one should you buy?
For a solitary desk or reading lamp, choose based on the desired behavior:
- Schedules and adjustable white light: smart bulb
- Immediate physical control: plug-in dimmer
- A household that dislikes apps: plug-in dimmer
- A renter experimenting with smart-home platforms: one no-hub smart bulb
- A lamp that already has an excellent dimmable bulb: plug-in dimmer
- A lamp whose switch is routinely turned off: plug-in dimmer
Neither option needs to become a whole-home commitment. Solve one lamp, live with the result, and only then decide whether the same approach belongs elsewhere.
