Smart bulbs are the easy entrance to connected lighting. Smart switches are usually the more complete renovation. Neither is universally better.

Choose bulbs when flexibility matters

Bulbs are ideal for lamps, renters and rooms where color is genuinely useful. They are easy to try and easy to move.

Choose switches when the room matters more than the app

Switches preserve the expected control at the wall. They can manage several fixtures at once and do not become unreachable because someone turned off the wrong toggle.

For most permanent ceiling lighting, I prefer switches. For lamps and small atmospheric moments, bulbs remain wonderfully practical.

Renters working with a single lamp have another useful option. The smart bulb versus plug-in dimmer guide compares complete setup cost, compatibility and everyday control.
